Robot-assisted laparoscopic lateral suspension in pelvic organ prolapse

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common problem in parous women. About 40% of all women develop POP in their lifetime. The types of repair surgery vary depending on the type of prolapse and associated symptoms. Minimally invasive surgery can be performed widely to meet female patients’ demands in which they would like to have less surgical scarring and less complication. The aim of this video is to introduce key steps for robot-assisted laparoscopic lateral suspension in POP.

This video demonstrates robot-assisted laparoscopic lateral suspension technique. The patient is a 65-year-old woman with symptomatic stage III uterine prolapse. At first, left salpingo-oophorectomy was performed due to a huge ovarian tumor using robotic single-site system and additional robotic instrument at the right side. After that, procedures for lateral suspension were performed using conventional laparoscopic devices and a self-styled non-absorbable polypropylene monofilament mesh. The operation was completed without any complication. The patient went home without urinary drainage on postoperative day 2. Robot-assisted laparoscopic lateral suspension could be a feasible and safe procedure in patients with POP and it should be considered as a surgical option that allows preservation of the uterus.
